JOAN BRUNEAU

Joan Bruneau’s skillfully executed, wheel thrown and altered work is widely respected as fine contemporary craft. Bruneau was the 2004 Winifred Shantz Award recipient, which funded her research of Etruscan and Maiolica Pottery through a Residency at La Meridiana International Ceramics Center, Italy in 2005.

Bruneau studied at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design and Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design, prior to completing an MFA at the University of Minnesota in 1993. She has maintained a pottery studio and gallery, Nova Terra Cotta, in Lunenburg, N.S. since 1995, while working as regular part time Faculty at NSCAD University. She has also taught Distance Education Programs for Glasgow School of Art, Scotland, Red Deer College, Alberta, and Australia National University, Canberra, Australia. Bruneau has presented workshops and lectures in Canada and the US, as well as at La Meridiana International Ceramics Center, Certaldo, Italy, the Australia National University, Canberra and Yixing International Conference, Jingdezhen Ceramics Inststitute in China.

Recent solo exhibitions of Bruneau’s work have been mounted at The Clay Art Center, Port Chester, NY in 2005 and at Harbinger Gallery, Waterloo, in 2003. With numerous group exhibitions to her credit in Canada, the US and internationally since 1993, Bruneau’s work has recently been featured in Ontario group exhibitions at the Burlington Art Centre, the Canadian Clay and Glass Gallery in Waterloo, Jonathon Bancroft-Snell Gallery, London, Harbourfront Center, Toronto, and in the “On The Table: 100 years of Functional Ceramics” exhibition at the Gardiner Museum. Her work has been acquired for the permanent collections of the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia, the Sykes Gallery Millersville University in the US, and the Jingdezhen Ceramics Institute in China, as well for many private collections.

Published images of Bruneau’s work appear in Soda Glazing by Ruth Anne Tudball, both Functional Pottery (2001) and The Ceramics Spectrum by Robin Hopper, The Art of Contemporary American Pottery by Kevin Hluch, Smashing Glazes by Susan Peterson, Studio Ceramics in Canada by Gail Crawford, and 500 Platters, Plates & Chargers published by Lark Books, as well as in several journals including Ceramics Monthly (April 2003, January 2002).

Using the red earthenware native to Nova Scotia, Joan Bruneau creates pottery inspired by historical Chinese and European pottery forms, also botanical and architectural shapes. She describes her forms as “robust…with sumptuous, sophisticated ornamentation, achieved through slip decoration, underglazes and food safe glazes.” Bruneau will demonstrate wheel-thrown and reconstructed forms using a “cut and paste” technique at the FUSION Ottawa Conference. Bruneau enjoys “gestural throwing lines, dynamic volumes and structural seams as marks of this making process.” Her intent is to design forms that enhance the presentation of food and flowers, to enrich the quality of daily experience, celebrating beauty in our domestic lives, in a culture otherwise bombarded with information and big - box consumerism“. www.joanbruneau.com

SAM CHUNG

A native of Minneapolis, Minnesota, Sam Chung is currently an Assistant Professor of Ceramics, Arizona State University, Tempe. Chung received a B.A. with a concentration in Ceramics from St. Olaf College, Northfield, Minnesota in 1992 and completed a M.F.A. in 1997 at Arizona State University, Tempe. Chung has also participated in a number of artist residencies that include the Guldagergaard International Ceramic Research Center, Skaelskør, Denmark; Watershed Center for the Ceramic Arts, Newcastle, Maine; Anderson Ranch Arts Center, Snowmass Village, Colorado. Chung has presented over 65 lectures and workshops since1996. Far-reaching locations such as Penland School of Crafts, Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts,  Anderson Ranch Arts Center, Haystack Mountain School of Crafts, Baltimore Clayworks and University of Alaska-Anchorage, in the US. represent a few of the prestigious ceramics centres where Chung has presented his techniques. Internationally known, Chung was a featured presenter at the Canadian Ceramics Conference at Alberta College of Art and Design, Calgary, 2009 and in at The Pottery Workshop and Experimental Factory-Jingdezhen, Jingdezhen, China, in 2008. He was a feature demonstrator at the National Council on Education for Ceramic Arts in Indiana, 2004.

In his artist’s statement Chung specifies “A consistent point of departure for my work has been the ceramic vessel and grappling with the balance between form and function. I am interested in the way that pots have the unique ability to serve a multitude of roles and functions.”

With numerous solo and group exhibitions to his credit, Chung’s work is included in several internationally known permanent collections such as The Crocker Art Museum, Sacramento, California, The American Museum of Ceramic Art, Pomona, California, Guldagergaard International Ceramic Research Center, Skaelskor, Denmark, the World Ceramic Exposition Foundation, Incheon World Ceramic Center, Gyeonggi-do, Korea, the Jingdezhen Ceramic Institute, Jingdezhen, China, the Shepparton Art Gallery, La Trobe University, Victoria, Australia, and the University of Arkansas Fulbright Ceramics Collection, Fayetteville, Arkansas.

Chung’s work has been published in numerous books about ceramics including Susan Peterson’s Contemporary Ceramics, John Britt’s The Complete Guide to High-Fire Glazes, Robin Hopper’s Making Marks, and Robert Pipenburg’s The Spirit of Ceramic Design. Among the scores of journal articles featuring the work of Sam Chung are Clay Times (March/April 2008 and November/December 2000), Ceramics Monthly (March 2003, January 2001 and 2000, June/July/August 1999, February, 1997) as well the Korean Quarterly, the Australian journal Review, Craft Arts International and Ceramics.

Chung states he is “interested in the challenge of creating pots that reflect our contemporary time, while drawing from the vernacular of pottery shapes that have lasted for ages.” At The FUSION Ottawa Conference, Chung will focus on the construction of pouring pots (pitchers, ewers, teapots) using slab construction. There will be an emphasis on how drawing is incorporated into the design of forms. The design of his most recent work, inspired by various forms of script – Islamic calligraphy, graffiti, and Korean cloud motifs, occurs through the act of drawing; he is intrigued by re-introducing drawing at the end of the process The discussion will focus on the relationship between form, function, and ergonomics as it relates to functional pottery. www.samchungceramics.com
